As a cinematographer and fashion photographer, I am always on the lookout for opportunities where I can utilize my skills. This is why I was very enthusiastic when I was invited to the ASC Fashion Show by my good friends, Kiran Khan and Amith Singh Chauhan.
What Is The ASC Fashion Show?
For starters, it’s one of the fashion shows during New York Fashion Week. Its main focus is to provide a platform for international designers to showcase their designs. Put together by a power couple, Kiran Khan and Amith Singh Chauhan from ASC Productions, it is one of the best fashion shows during New York Fashion Week.
The ASC Fashion Show presented over 20 global designers with a great team of hair and makeup artists. What I liked the most was that it promoted awareness of the Sikh culture through innovations in fashion design.
My chosen field requires a lot of networking. It’s something I truly place great importance on because it has given me a lot of opportunities to work with amazing people. I have known Amith and Kiran through a mutual friend, Ritesh, the founder of Awesome TV. They asked me to work with them for the ASC Fashion Show as their media partner and I happily agreed.
I knew it was going to be an exciting event with a ton of opportunity to meet driven people. People who are passionate about what they do and are looking to create a positive impact in their respective industries. For this reason, I decided to collaborate with Amiel, founder of breakingboundaries.co, Koren, from the YouTube channel, korendezvous, and a good friend of mine, Sam.
I collaborated with Amiel, Koren, and Sam because I’m familiar with their work. Breaking Boundaries’ current project is to feature people and businesses that are challenging their limits. The goal is to share a story that will resonate with people and empower them to go after their goals. Koren from korendezvous does amazing DIY videos and highlight reels of various events. Sam is an aspiring actor and one of the crew members of our company.
ASC Fashion Show Experience
After we decided to collaborate, we met up and spoke over Skype a few times to get a handle on what our agenda would be once we got to the event. We decided to get to the event around 2PM to set up and start networking.
Once we got inside the runway room, we got acquainted with one of the models, Limuel Hayag Vilela. We asked if we would be able to interview him as he represents a very genuine take on fashion and what he would like to contribute to the industry. That, and he’s Filipino! As Limuel said, pinoy pride!
With 20 global designers featured, we found it to be a little bit too long but was a great and inspiring experience nonetheless. This was Amiel’s and Koren’s first fashion show so they were highly motivated and very energetic as usual. We couldn’t hang around each other most of the time because we were busy with each of our assigned work.
When the fashion show ended, we stayed a bit to talk to some of the models and one really stood out, Kayla Philipps. She was very humble, upbeat, and pretty new to modeling. After we spoke to her, we headed out to get something to eat before we headed out to the after party with one of the staff members of Carmelo Soberano Visuals, Anthony Maddatu.
As mentioned, we wanted to feature someone who stood out to us” through their passion, confidence, and drive.
Meet Limuel Hayag Vilela. He is an Ambassador of Goodwill Awardee, Mister Copper World 2016, Mister Pacific World Philippines, and 2016 Mister Philippines Canada 2015. With awards like these under his belt, we were extremely excited to be able to speak with him. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to record the interview on camera so we had to do a regular Q&A, off camera. Here is a snippet of the interview:
Koren: “What does ‘fashion’ mean to you?”
Limuel: “Fashion is self-expression- a platform to connect with people. It’s international culture understanding, celebration of creativity, valuing the art of style and acknowledging global diversity.”
Koren: “How do you find your signature walk or pose?”
Limuel: “My runway walk is a story of my life as a dreamer, a believer, and a fighter. If you noticed, during my walk, I always look back because I want to leave something about the masterpiece that I am wearing. Remember, on the runway, you are selling the pieces of art and the story behind the designs.”
Koren: “Any tips or advice for aspiring models?”
Limuel: “To all the aspiring models, always remember that life is a fashion show. Every time you walk, the spotlight is on you. Just be yourself and express what you feel inside. Don’t be afraid to walk on center stage because that is your opportunity to show to the fashion world your style and uniqueness. And, remember, rejection is part of fashion so keep going until you get the perfect fit for you. Stay humble and fearless . Keep in mind that it’s not all about you, it’s about fashion.”
The After Party
The fashion show held their after party at 5th & Mad in Midtown Manhattan. I introduced Amiel and Koren to Ritesh and there might be some future collaborations in the work!
We decided not to stay long at the after party. The show finally caught up to us and we were all extremely tired. During the drive home, went through future plans of collaborating again because I feel like we work extremely well together. We were all very attuned to each other’s work style and adjusted accordingly.
Overall, it was a great, unique experience!
